New York Parks
Park Features
We have executed a number of large bronzes for the City of New York Parks system. A thumbnail sketch was provided from the designer, Mike Browne of NYC Parks, and the piece grew from there. These are all sculpted in New Hamburg, and cast at Skara, an industrial foundry in Mississaugua, Ontario. This work is somewhat unique in that it is designed for sand casting, which, under some conditions, can be much cheaper than traditional lost wax casting.
IThese works were built around a Styrofoam core, which was carved to very near the finished size. A 5mm thickness of epoxy clay was modelled on to the surface to create the final detail. After approval, the clay surface, now rock hard, was cut into pieces that could be cast in sand. These 3 m sculptures often came apart in 100 to 170 pieces. After casting, these numbered pieces were welded in Vince Graham's studio in Georgetown, Ontario.
Trystan Site Furnishings is our "producer" on these projects, looking after all the endless tasks of contracts, communication, insurance and shipping.
