Building the Master Form

1) starting the project

2) building the form

3) creating detail, casting

4) the unveiling

In late October the design was set, and the full sized work could begin. Within a few weeks, Stewart had the horse to full size in Styrofoam, for use as a base for modelling wax. Ruth Abernethy, a nearby sculptor with a substantial national reputation was invited to join the team to get the modelling done in time. The installation date had been set for May 22, 2005. Ruth's sister, Jean, has her own artistic career as an equestrian illustrator. Jean flew up from Atlanta, and spent ten glorious days passing on her extensive knowledge of horses and her obvious love of Big Ben.

A surprising amount of time was spent at the photo reference table. Each feature had to be checked and cross-referenced from as many angles as possible. Photos from Jayne Huddleston and Shawn Hamilton were the main sources of material.
